13 Cool GroupMe Tips and Tricks
There are lots of communication apps available, but few do group-based conversations as well as GroupMe. GroupMe is a free group messaging app with some very useful features. It doesn’t blast you with ads, is very easy to use, and is available on every device!
Cool Tips and Tricks for GroupMe in 2020
1. Make a Skype Call
GroupMe joined the Skype family in 2011, so of course there is some integration with it. They made it super easy to do. When you’re in a chat, just look for the Skype logo at the top of the screen and click it to create or schedule a Skype call. This will create a link that your friend(s) can use to join the call.
2. Add a poll
Sometimes you need to know what everyone in your group thinks about a certain topic, or maybe you just need to vote on where you’re meeting for lunch. They’ve made it super easy to do this by allowing you to create your own polls in GroupMe. To create one, click on the paperclip/plus icon, then look for the poll icon and click ‘create new poll’ to get started. Add your poll options, then set an end date for the poll.
5. Media Search
Media Search allows you to quickly find pics, gifs, and videos to share in your chat. Click the paperclip/plus icon, then the search icon at the top. Type in a word or phrase to search and find your image.
4. Make a Meme
Memes are the communication tool of choice for this generation, and GroupMe has made them super easy to create. Click the paperclip/plus icon, then take a pic, upload a pic, or use the Media Search tool to find a pic or gif. Once you have a pic or gif selected, look for the “meme” option. When you click it, you will be able to add text and then add the image to your chat.
5. Share your Location
Sharing your location or a specific location within a group can be super useful. Everyone gets an easy to use link that they can open in their navigation app of choice. Click the paperclip/plus icon, then the maps drop-pin icon. Choose ‘current location’ or another location to share.
6. Premium Emoji Packs
Perhaps the out-of-the-box emoticons don’t offer enough diversity in communication for you. Maybe words are too complex, so you choose hieroglyphs instead. Look no further! You can easily purchase emoticon packs in GroupMe. In the chat box, click on the smiley emoticon, then click on the icon tab that looks like a storefront. Here you will see a list of available emoticon packs available, such as Adventure Time for $0.99.
7. Share from Other Apps/Browsers
Many apps today have the ability to share images, videos, links, etc across apps and GroupMe is no different. When you are in a different app, choose the share option, then look for the GroupMe app. You’ll be able to share it directly to a group or chat.
8. Use @Mentions
Sometimes you need to get another group member’s attention, so you can mention then in a chat and they will get a notification. Simply type ‘@’ in the chat window and a menu will popup that lists group members you can mention. Once selected, type out your message to them and they will receive a mobile notification, if enabled on their end.
9. Like or Reply to Messages
If you’re using the app in Windows 10, you will see a notification popup when you receive a message in GroupMe. The notification allows you to like or reply right from the notification, which is convenient.
iBeacon is a useful feature when you’re physically with someone or a group of people and you all want to join the same group in GroupMe. However, it is an iOS only feature. Make sure Bluetooth is enabled then when you go to add a member you will see the option to add nearby friends.
11. Emoticon Keyboard

12. SMS Commands
You probably didn’t know this, but you can actually use GroupMe over SMS messages, without using the app. The instructions are a little complex, and it only works within the US, but this could be useful if you have a member without a smartphone. Check it out here.

GroupMe is great at the group-based chat, but it can also do direct messages. To get started, open the app and click on the edit icon to, then select ‘Send Direct Message’.
